Erectile Dysfunction is one of the commonest issue every man faces. On an average 4 in 1 Indian male will face ED during their lifetime. It is more common than you might think and you are not alone if you are having issues with erection. Before going into detail about ED, let’s understand what erection is and physiology and mechanism of erection. Â
What is Erection?
Erection is physiological response to sexual stimulation in male where penis becomes firm, harder and bigger. When aroused, brain send signal to smooth muscles in penis via nervous system to relax. This relaxation allows blood vessels to dilate and causes increase in blood flow to penis. This increase in blood flow will also fill corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum. The blood remains trapped temporarily, making the penis rigid, hard and elevated.

·        Vascular Disease: Narrowing blood vessels due to atherosclerosis can lead to poor blood supply to penile tissues and can lead to ED.
·        Injury: Injury to pelvic area, pelvic muscle can lead to ED.
·        Medications: q1blood pressure medications, antianxiety and antidepressant medications, glaucoma eye drops, and cancer chemotherapy agents are just some of the many medications associated with ED.
